If you are visiting Jaipur, this grand citadel atop a hill is a principal example of the Rajputana architecture. Planning a visit soon? Check out this detailed guide on Amer Fort, covering its history, entry fees and what not to miss.

Amer Fort or Amber Fort History

Located in the town of Amer, about 11 kms from Jaipur, Amer Fort is a historic monument that depicts a confluence of Rajput and Mughal architecture. It is located on a forested hill and a surrounding Maota Lake adds its charm of the monument. From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking panorama of the entire town.

In the early times, the state of Jaipur was also called as Amber and was overlooked by five different tribes. The original edifice of the current fort was built by Raja Man Singh. IN the early 1600’s Jai Singh I made improvements and additions. Successive rulers for 150 years ruled from the palace until the capital was shifted in 1700s to present day Jaipur. The fort has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site among the other six hills forts in Rajasthan.

The name Amer or Amber is derived from the Ambikeshwar Temple of Lord Shiva, built at the top of the mountain.

Amber Fort Rides

Tourists must note that Amer Fort and palace are on a hill and require a steep climb to reach on top. While one can walk it up, there are jeep rides, golf carts and elephant rides as well that ply from the parking area to the central courtyard.
