Diwali 2026 Getaways: Best Places to Visit This Diwali Vacation

Diwali is one of those times of the year when taking a break feels particularly natural. Offices slow down, families make plans, and a few extra days off can turn the festival into a proper holiday. For me, the best Diwali vacation is one where the destination adds something to the festive mood rather than simply giving me somewhere to stay.

So, where should you go for your Diwali holidays 2026? You could experience the lights and heritage of Jaipur, spend the festival by the coast in Goa, head into the hills of Coonoor, or make a short road trip to Alibaug. These are some of the best places to visit during Diwali vacation in India, depending on the kind of break you want.

What Are the Best Places to Visit in Diwali?

1. Jaipur: For a Festive Heritage Experience

Jaipur would be high on my list if I wanted to experience Diwali through architecture, food, shopping, and the atmosphere of a historic city.

The old city becomes particularly interesting around the festival, with markets and streets taking on a more festive character. During the day, I would make time for Jaipur’s forts, palaces and bazaars, then leave the evening for a good meal and the celebrations.

The advantage of Jaipur is that the holiday doesn’t need to revolve entirely around Diwali. There is enough history and culture to make the trip worthwhile even outside the festive activities.

Best for: Families, couples, shopping, food and heritage.

2. Varanasi: For a More Spiritual Diwali

For a completely different kind of Diwali vacation, I would consider Varanasi.

The city’s spiritual character makes the festival feel less like a conventional holiday and more like an experience rooted in tradition. The ghats, temples, narrow lanes, and evening rituals give you plenty to experience beyond sightseeing.

I would go here if I wanted the festival to be central to the trip rather than simply something happening in the background.

Best for: Spiritual travel, culture, photography, and immersive experiences.

3. Goa: For a Beachside Diwali Vacation

Goa might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about Diwali, but that’s exactly why I like it as a holiday option.

You can combine the festival with everything else that makes Goa appealing—beaches, restaurants, cafés, heritage neighbourhoods and time by the pool. North Goa gives you more options for dining and going out, while South Goa works well if you want a more relaxed coastal break.

Estate de Alinthea in Siolim is a good option for larger families or groups, while Alvora Villa 1F in Aldona works well for a smaller, more private getaway.

Best for: Families, groups, couples, beaches and longer holidays.

4. Alibaug: For an Easy Family Getaway

If I only had a few days, Alibaug would be one of my first choices. Beaches, forts, seafood and countryside drives make it easy to enjoy without overplanning.

For a private Diwali break, Orchard House works well for larger families, while Siena Villa C is a more intimate option for smaller groups.

Best for: Families, groups, road trips and private celebrations.

5. Lonavala: For a Private Villa Break

Lonavala is ideal when the holiday is more about spending time together than ticking off attractions. The short drive from Mumbai and Pune also makes it particularly convenient for a Diwali break.

Villa Capri works well for larger groups, while Bamboo Breeze offers a more intimate setting with plenty to keep families entertained at the property.

Best for: Families, groups, road trips and villa-focused holidays.

6. Coonoor: For a Hill Holiday

For me, Coonoor is the choice when I want to disconnect properly. Cooler weather, tea estates and the Nilgiris make it easy to build the trip around a few outings and plenty of time at the villa.

Amani Villas, part of the Luma collection, is suited to smaller groups, while Villa Melrose offers a more intimate hill stay.

Best for: Couples, families, nature and longer hill holidays.

Where Should You Stay During Your Diwali Vacation?

I find that accommodation matters more during a festival holiday because you’re often spending more time together than you would on a regular trip.

A private villa can work particularly well for families and groups. Lohono’s current collections include private villas in destinations such as Goa, Alibaug, Lonavala and Coonoor, as well as Mussoorie and Dehradun.

Plan Your Diwali Vacation 2026

A good Diwali holiday doesn’t need to be complicated. Pick one destination, give yourself enough time to experience it, and choose a stay that makes spending time together easy.

Whether you want the energy of Jaipur, the beaches of Goa, the hills of Coonoor, or a private villa in Alibaug or Lonavala, the best places to visit on Diwali vacation are the ones that fit the kind of break you actually want.
